MATSUMOTO PUBLIC HOUSE
Along Nakacho Street in Matsumoto, where traditional kura storehouses stand in a row, we designed an interior that resonates with this historic scenery while expressing the Matsumoto of today.
The pub, as a typology, traces its roots to England.
Matsumoto, too, carries a history shaped by English influence through the Arts and Crafts movement, which inspired the local Matsumoto Mingei (folk-craft) movement.
In this project, we redefine the pub as an open, public place where anyone can drop by, and reinterpret the spirit of Mingei as a contemporary expression of Shinshu’s craftsmanship.
These two distant histories converge into a single narrative that forms the core of Matsupub.
The interior takes Matsumoto Castle as a metaphor, composed primarily in black and white.
At its center stands a sculptural counter that carries the presence of local craft, its rich texture created through washi paper applied by artist Wataru Hatano.
Beneath the double-height void at the back of the space, a quiet lounge area invites guests to settle in.
Its key color is drawn from the wisteria blooming at the foot of Matsumoto Castle, with touches of handcrafted warmth found throughout the lighting and furniture.
Like pubs in their original form, we hope this place grows beyond the bounds of a restaurant—
becoming a natural gathering point for the community, a social space woven into everyday life, and a storyteller of what Matsumoto is becoming.
