HOUSE W

Built 53 years ago, this 76.43㎡ apartment is located within a large residential complex of nearly 1,000 units.
The project renovates a split-level apartment within this large-scale community.

The residents are a chef—whose restaurant we previously designed—his wife, and their two cats.
Because we were already familiar with each other’s personalities and ways of working, the design process moved forward with a great deal of trust, allowing many of the finer decisions to be left to us.

The existing structure is strongly articulated by massive structural walls that divide the space.
Rather than resisting these conditions, the renovation organizes the plan by following the rhythm created by the structure.

At the center of the home, within the dining space framed by the structural walls, we placed a gently curved kitchen counter.
When the chef stands there, the space instantly transforms into a small stage.
The dimensional rules of the kitchen were developed based on those of the restaurant we had previously designed.

The wet areas are consolidated within walls clad in oak paneling.
These wooden surfaces guide both movement and sightlines toward the deeper areas of the home.
Cork flooring was chosen to reduce strain on the cats’ legs and joints, and a catwalk runs along the walls of the living room. We imagine the two shy cats spending time there.

Material textures and the overall color scheme were arranged to resonate with the atmosphere of the existing structure.
The space is composed in a calm and muted palette—natural in character, yet never overly bright.

The rhythm of the structure, the time of cooking, and the movements of the cats gradually overlap to shape the everyday life of this home.

Toward the end of the project, we learned that a new life would soon be born into this household.
We look forward to witnessing how the time of this new family will unfold within the home.
