HOUSE H
This 83 m² apartment renovation is located near the riverbed of the Tama River in Komae, Tokyo.
It is a place where residents can live with a constant sense of the expansive sky that opens along the riverside.
The home is for a couple in their thirties, their child who turned two during the course of the project, and a dog. The husband works as a womenswear buyer for a department store.
The design began with the client’s candid remark:
“I don’t want the kind of life people call #a careful lifestyle.”
Clothes, shoes, books, and artworks naturally accumulate in daily life. Rather than hiding these belongings, the aim was to create a home where they can appear naturally while still being accepted as part of the spatial scenery.
The renovation carefully balances three approaches: adding, retaining, and exposing.
Parts of the existing interior were intentionally preserved, while new built elements responding to everyday living were layered alongside the expressive concrete structure, allowing different layers of life to quietly accumulate within the space.
Because his work often takes him to Europe, the idea of updating a home while inheriting elements of the existing interior felt like a natural choice for the husband.
The color palette centers on woods with warm reddish tones—cherry, lauan, and red oak. Vintage lighting and furniture are added to this base, creating a setting where the residents’ many belongings can settle naturally into the space as a single scene.
Rather than being overly arranged,
the traces of everyday life themselves become the expression of the space.
