FRECKLE donuts + belly button GELATO
Located in Jiyugaoka, Tokyo, “FRECKLE donuts + belly button GELATO,” affectionately known as “FREBO,” brings together two brands under one roof: FRECKLE donuts and belly button GELATO, a gelato brand dedicated to ingredients sourced from Matsumoto and the wider Shinshu region.
The concept is “The Extraordinary in the Everyday.”
The name “belly button” refers to the navel. It originates from Nagano’s location near the geographical center of Japan, which has earned the region the nickname “the belly button of Japan.”
We translated this idea into the spatial design itself. The planning began by defining a “belly button” within the footprint of the space. From this single point, layers radiate outward in concentric circles, shaping the arrangement of counters and seating as well as the composition of the floor and ceiling.
The space is defined by the distinct brand colors of FRECKLE donuts and belly button GELATO. By using the two colors consistently and establishing a clear rhythm in the way they transition, the two brands retain their individual identities while coming together as one cohesive space.
Color and form overlap to create a playful landscape.
Buying a donut or a gelato is an ordinary, everyday act. Within that simple moment, we wanted to create a small sense of the extraordinary that can only be experienced here.
Jiyugaoka is home to a dense and ever-changing mix of sweet shops. Rather than creating a place that is simply new, we aimed to make somewhere that catches the eye and makes the act of visiting an experience in itself.
We hope that time spent here adds a small, unexpected scene to the everyday lives of those passing through Jiyugaoka.
